We are firm believers in the positive power of plants – plants help us relax, but they also help us to focus, get more creative, and find inspiration. In our book PLANT TRIBE we have delved into the strong power of plants when it comes to being creative. We pledge that you surround yourself with nature in order to trigger your creativity and boost inspiration. Hence, plants in (home) offices are the way to go! And thanks to the new plant modules from Swiss design brand USM Haller you can now combine a piece of design furniture with your love for plants.

To celebrate the launch of the new USM Haller plant modules and their campaign ‘A World of Plants for USM Haller’ we have teamed up with USM to show you four home stories where plant enthusiasts live, create, work, meet and celebrate life surrounded by nature. These features will come over the course of this year to bring you more ideas on how to live happily ever after with plants.

The second home story takes us to the new home in the South of France of our co-founder Judith de Graaff. Judith is the co-author of both our books, Urban Jungle and Plant Tribe, and founded the Urban Jungle Bloggers community together with Igor Josifovic-Kemper in 2013. In Judith’s new home in the Ardèche, the spacious entry and hallway lacked structure and functionality. As a connecting space between entry, living room, kitchen, and all bedrooms of the home, the hallway was mostly used by her cats to play and run around. Lot of precious floor and storage space was left unused as well. Thus, a full shelving unit from USM Haller was the best option to combine design, space for storage as well as display, and a stylish solution for Judith’s houseplants.

The USM Haller shelving unit includes three new plant modules. Each plant module features three integrated plant pots with a watering set, consisting of a pot insert and water level indicator. There is no need for worries about dripping water or soggy plant roots – the simple yet smart watering insert and the indicators help you water your plants when needed without overwatering and without any spilling. Additionally, the plant pots come in two varieties:  Basalt or Terracotta, as Judith has chosen for her white USM Haller shelving unit.

The entry and hallway of Judith’s home in the South of France has a bright and sunny vibe. Lots of natural light comes in through the big windows, filtered by striped blinds that add a touch of “holiday” to the space, a hint to the surroundings of the house: a popular holiday destination. Two oversized mirrors reflect the light throughout the hallway and complement the white facades and metal grid of the USM Haller shelves. On the rear end of the shelves, a USM Haller book display unit allows to show off the Plant Tribe and Urban Jungle books, and it also has a convenient storage behind to keep the international language editions of the books.

Urban Jungle Bloggers - USM Haller World of plants #urbanjunglebloggers

USM Haller shelves added multifunctionality to Judith’s hallway: there’s a coat rack as well as a wide bench to read or hang out with the cats (or spoil them with cat candy before bedtime). The plant modules are home to nine large plants that match the light situation of the hallway. The Alocasia sarawakensis, Philodendron birkin and Chamaedorea elegans soak up the largest amounts of light on the rear end closest to the windows, as where the Thaumatophyllum xanadu, Ficus robusta and Homalomena get only indirect light and the large Schefflera thrives in semi-shade near the bench. For everyone who lives with plants and pets: the USM plant modules are ideal too: with the big pots neatly stuck into the plant modules, there is no risk of cats or dogs tipping over the pots.

World of Plants for USM Haller – A Berlin Home Office

USM Haller, World of Plants, Home Story, Berlin, plant shelvesUSM Haller, World of Plants, Home Story, Berlin, plant shelvesThe first home story takes us to the new Berlin home of our co-founder Igor Josifovic-Kemper. Igor is the co-author of both our books, Urban Jungle and Plant Tribe, and founded the Urban Jungle Bloggers community together with Judith de Graaff in 2013. In Igor’s new apartment one room has to fulfill two roles – the role of a home office as well as a guest room. Thus, a full shelving unit from USM Haller was the best option to combine design, space for storage as well as display, and a stylish solution for Igor’s houseplants.USM Haller, World of Plants, Home Story, Berlin, plant shelves

There is no need for worries about dripping water or soggy plant roots – the simple yet smart watering insert and the indicators help you water your plants when needed without overwatering and without any spilling. USM Haller, World of Plants, Home Story, Berlin, plant shelvesThe home office/guest room in Igor’s Berlin apartment has an earthy and natural vibe. The abundance of beige and the metal grid of the USM Haller shelves are contrasted by the organic shapes and colors of the plants. The USM Haller E adds another highlight: the integrated light panels highlight styling arrangements and by dimming the light create a zen-like atmosphere to unwind and make the guests feel more than comfortable in this green guest room. Moreover, the shelving unit hides a sliding working desk and an additional, second desk by opening one of the storage modules.USM Haller, World of Plants, Home Story, Berlin, plant shelvesUSM Haller, World of Plants, Home Story, Berlin, plant shelvesUSM Haller, World of Plants, Home Story, Berlin, plant shelvesUSM Haller, World of Plants, Home Story, Berlin, plant shelves

When it comes to plants, Igor’s tips for the USM Haller plant modules is simple yet practical: select your plants according to the light situation of the plant modules. Two of Igor’s plant modules are placed on the right side of the shelving unit. This side is closer to the window with bright indirect light, while a third plant module is placed on the left end where there is only semi-shade. For the semi-shade corner Igor opted for a Snake plant, a ZZ plant and a variegated Monstera. The plant modules on the right feature a Calathea Burle Marxii, a Calathea ornata and a Heliconia, and the module closest to the window hosts a Begonia maculata, a Philodendron Tortum, and a Philodendron Billietiae.USM Haller, World of Plants, Home Story, Berlin, plant shelvesUSM Haller, World of Plants, Home Story, Berlin, plant shelves

Botanical poetry in a bottle: Slow Pharmacy

slow pharmacy

Plants make you happier! We couldn’t agree more with Slow Pharmacy. For those of you who have not yet heard of this beautiful label from South Korea, let us have the honor to introduce you to the magic of bottled plants! The founders, Lee & Jeong, strongly believe that the power of plants contributes to our overall well-being. If you read our Plant Tribe book, you know this is a point where we fully agree with Slow Pharmacy. But these two creative Koreans have interpreted the idea of bringing plants into our homes in a new, minimalistic way: carefully selected plants, hand-filled in beautiful vials, floating in a transparent liquid and preserved for years to come. Slow Pharmacyslow pharmacyAdding Slow Pharmacy vials to your home adds a touch of botanical serenity. It is a poetic way of encapsulating the elusive beauty of a plant in a bottle, offering the viewer a moment of meditative serenity and calmness. By carefully choosing the place for your Slow Pharmacy vials, you will observe the play of light caressing the plant and presenting an array of hues and details that keep your attention. Not only does this look beautiful, it truly tickles your phantasy and creativity. And before you even know, you have relaxed fully while observing the floating plant in its vial. Botanical magic happened!slow pharmacyslow pharmacyWe both have added our selected Slow Pharmacy vials into our homes, too. Whether it is on a plant shelf accompanying your potted houseplants, on a desk to inspire your creativity, or in a darker corner of your home that is not suitable for a potted plant – the vials look stunning in every scenery and add a touch of simplicity, beauty and minimalism.

Is a bottled plant running against our belief in living houseplants? Absolutely not. These vials add a different touch to any plant loving home. Every plant specimen has been carefully chosen and hand-filled in Korea. It is a new way of bringing a touch of nature to your home. Igor says: “I love my Slow Pharmacy vials! I have selected three large vials and two smaller ones, each containing a different plant. I chose several spots in my home to display them. But my favorite spot is on my desk – the light changes over day and offers a spectrum of colors. It gives me a reason to pause, appreciate the beauty of nature and continue my work with more creativity.”Slow Pharmacyslow pharmacyslow pharmacyJudith has also added a selection of Slow Pharmacy to her new home in the South of France. She says: “I love how the Slow Pharmacy glass vials allow to decorate your home with botanicals, even if a room or corner doesn’t provide enough light for normal houseplants. Our bedroom for instance is, unfortunately, too dark to grow plants, but the delicate and carefully selected plants like the Tabaria fern and Capsella bursa-pastoris make our bedroom shelves look like a super stylish and contemporary cabinet de curiosités.”

We encourage you, plant lover, to hop over to Slow Pharmacy and have a look at their incredible range of beautiful plant vials. Make your pick but be warned: it is not simple! Choose a vial for your home or as a thoughtful present for a beloved person – and finally no green finger excuse will work as the bottled plants from Slow Pharmacy will remain almost eternally beautiful – no work or care required! And keep in mind: plants make you happier! Yes they do.slow pharmacyslow pharmacy

Plant Tribe book launch at Maison Palme in Berlin

Plant Tribe book launch event at Maison Palme in Berlin

Because all the Plant Tribe book events that we planned for the official booklaunch in March were postponed, we were very excited that we managed to organize a small Covid-proof event in Berlin for the launch of the German edition of the Plant Tribe book. Only two days before new hygiene measures were announced for Germany, we had a very intimate event in several small groups at the beautiful Maison Palmė. The location in the heart of Wedding Berlin was an obvious choice: it’s the studio and event space of Jules Villbrandt, our friend and photographer that did all the photography for the Plant Tribe book, and her team Maria and Wilkin from Herz&Blut.

Last year, we traveled with Jules to the 17 homes that are featured in the book and somehow this was the first time we were reunited again, which was lovely despite the crazy circumstances:

For these unique plant spheres they were inspired by the Good Energy with Plants chapter in the book and integrated quartz and aragonite in the design for good energy for your plants.

Each plant sphere has a perfectly designed drainage hole on the bottom as well as a small dripping tray. They are easy to plant (18cm diameter and 2 liters soil capacity) and because every piece is handmade, they’re a unique piece of art for your home.

They provided five pieces of art to add a gallery vibe to our book launch. After all we think that plants and art are a fabulous combination. Check out their amazing selection of limited edition art pieces here.

After mingling and nibbles, we had a little talk about the book, we chatted with Jules about our big trip to all of the 17 homes in the US, Brazil and around Europe and answered questions from all the lovely people that joined us for the event. Because the groups were so small and the event space so cozy: it were pretty intimate talks and we revealed quite a bit about the process of creating a book, how we worked with our publishers and how it was to visit so many plant lovers in all these different places.

Dirty Roots Berlin

Urban Jungle Bloggers - Dirty Roots Berlin #urbanjunglebloggers

They look like spheres from outer space, like comet pieces turned into planters, or geodes found in deep caves. But the truth is much more simple yet quite as fascinating: these amazing round planters are all handmade by a creative American-Polish couple based in Berlin. We are happy to introduce you to Dirty Roots Berlin.

Urban Jungle Bloggers - Dirty Roots Berlin #urbanjunglebloggers

Dirty Roots Berlin is a passion project by Adam Cotorceanu and his girlfriend Agnieszka. Like many botanical projects this one started as a simple idea and side project. Today, the creative duo produces dozens of planters and sells them successfully online as well as through special events such as this upcoming pop-up in Berlin. And during the Covid crisis the project even gained more momentum and kept both of them busy producing the spherical planters.

Urban Jungle Bloggers - Dirty Roots Berlin #urbanjunglebloggers

What makes Dirty Roots Berlin so special is that every planter is unique. The planters are made of concrete and volcanic rocks and come in various sizes and shades. And every single production step is truly handmade by the two creators. They mix the concrete themselves creating various colors and effects, they add volcanic rocks thus providing a perfect living environment for plants as the pots breathe and have drainage holes.

Once these pots are made, the next fun step kicks in. The plant-loving couple then matches plants and pots creating almost living design objects. Every plant-pot combination is well considered and the final result get baptized accordingly: so with Dirty Roots Berlin you can add Hale-Bopp, Kalliope or Orion’s Belt to your home. And you guessed right: most of these names are actual names of asteroids or comets. Matchy matchy!

What we love about Dirty Roots Berlin is its passion and love. You can feel it in every piece. Additionally, every planter is a one-of-a-kind piece and you will definitely get something unique for your plant collection and plant shelf. But what really makes us happy too is that these planters and plant-pot combinations are very affordable! You don’t have to spend a fortune for a unique piece of plant goodness in your home. Have a look at their webshop, you will see what we mean!

Urban Jungle Bloggers - Dirty Roots Berlin #urbanjunglebloggers

All Dirty Roots Berlin pots come in three sizes: small, medium and giant (definitely eye-catcher and statement piece). Moreover, they come with small handmade saucers too that match the style of each planter and provide an additional stability if desired. We are fans and we are actually thinking of doing something special with Dirty Roots Berlin – but that is yet to be seen! Stay tuned!
